SUMMARY:
The person in this position directly supervises two or more operations managers in the Operations Department.
He or she carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws; oversees the entire Operations Department, ensuring compliance with FRA regulations, random drug testing, and engineer certification; and monitors performance and compliance with operating rules, power-brake law, and hours of service.
This role includes profit-and-loss responsibility at the regional level.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Develop and manage the operations departmental budget
•Administer engineer certifications and random drug-and-alcohol testing
•Supervise Operations Department staff, management, clerical staff, and train- and engine-service employees
•Recruit, interview, test, and select employees to fill vacant positions and to maintain required service levels
•Coordinate with Class I and short-line connections for movement of trains; coordinate other regional departments’ day-to-day activities with the Operations Department
•Monitor compliance; write and modify or amend operating rules by general order, summary of general order, general notices, and summary general notices
•Coordinate with traffic manager or Customer Service to ensure service requirements are met for customers
•Compile and keep statistical data related to train movements, fuel, and labor
•Assist with other projects and perform other duties as assigned
REQUIRED SKILLS AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
•Ten years of railroad operating experience in a management position; ten years of railroad experience with increasing responsibilities and operational complexity preferred
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR CREDENTIALS:
•Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education/experience; MBA preferred
